Underground comix, spelled with an "X" to warn the unwary reader that they were not in Kansas anymore, burst on the underground scene in 1968 when Robert Crumb showed up on Haight street peddling issues of the newly printed Zap number one from a baby carriage. Zap went on to become the preeminent underground comic of all time and featured the artwork of Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso, S. Clay Wilson, Gilbert Shelton, Spain and Robert Williams. Other cities spawned their own underground comic scenes yielding perennial favorites like The Freak Brothers, Bijou, Cheech Wizard and Trashman.
