Hailing from Hoboken, New Jersey, Yo La Tengo was formed in 1984 by husband-wife team Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley, with James McNew joining later. Their sound would expand beyond their initial indie rock roots, trending later towards dream pop, experimental rock, and noise pop, as exemplified by their 2000 release And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. They returned to form with the 2006 release I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass, this time adding string and horn arrangements gleaned from their experience recording soundtracks.
