One of the greatest British rock bands, The Who formed in 1964 and were immediately successful with their first hit single "Can't Explain." Their early sound was a lively take on blues rock, but after being influenced by The Beatles' psychedelic and art-rock experimentation they began to approach their music as a unified concept, which resulted in the landmark 1969 rock-opera Tommy. Their next rock-opera, 1973's Quadrophenia became their biggest success, reaching #2 in both the U.S. and the U.K. The Who have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, charted 27 Top 40 singles, 17 Top 10 albums with 5 of them multi-platinum sellers in the States. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
