Bill Champlin formed the Marin County based Sons of Champlin 1967 giving the San Francisco Sound a jazzier and funkier twist that served as counterpoint to the psychedelic scene. With their capable horn section, Champlin's soulful vocals and Hammond organ, and guitarist Terry Haggerty's blistering solos, their music pioneered a sound best described as "acid jazz." The band was renamed The Sons and later Yogi Phlegm before they split up in 1977. Champlin went on to join Chicago in 1981.
