After the breakup of alternative country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, songwriter-guitarist Jay Farrar formed Son Volt in 1994. The group's sound blended folk and country ballads with Americana, roots, and rock music in a similar way to Neil Young's work with Crazy Horse. Their first three albums met with critical acclaim, but the band dissolved after a 1999 tour. Farrar reformed Son Volt with new members in 2005 and continues to record and tour with them.
