Emerging from San Diego, California in 1966, Iron Butterfly crossed several genres including psychedelic rock, acid rock and hard rock. In 1968, an edited-down-to-single sized version of their 17-minute "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" became a huge hit. The heart of the song is an extended drum solo that was noteworthy in its excess, but served to tutor aspiring drummers for years.
