Beginning in the '60s, Mac Rebbenack served as a session musician for numerous artists including Sonny and Cher, Canned Heat and the Rolling Stones. He took on the moniker of Dr. John the Night Tripper with the release of his 1968 album Gris Gris with its hit "I Walk on Gilded Splinters." The spooky music combined elements of Zydeco, boogie-woogie, rock, and blues, flavored with a psychedelic blend of New Orleans' Mardi Gras and voodoo influences. His easily-recognizable voice growled and whispered in ominous implication, and reached a wider audience on his 1973 hit "Right Place, Wrong Time".
