George Frayne took on the stage name of Commander Cody and formed His Lost Planet Airmen as a rockabilly and country rock band based around boogie-woogie. A pioneering band in its use of Western swing, and more barroom country rather than bluegrass, the group became known for their marathon live shows. The core members moved to San Francisco and subsequently released their first record, 1971s Lost in the Ozone, which yielded their biggest hit "Hot Rod Lincoln."
