Artist Bio
Born in New York City in 1949, Carr grew up in Mississippi during the 1950's and
early 1960's. Being of Jewish descent, he experienced racial prejudice firsthand.
He now lives and works in East Oakland where he finds the cultural diversity of his
neighborhood to be a source of inspiration.
Carr received his formal training at the Memphis Art Academy, California College
of Arts and Crafts, and the San Francisco Art Institute. He is a painter. His early
works were painted in goache and concentrated watercolor inks. For the last ten years
he has worked exclusively in oil.
Carr's exhibitions include: "Wild Paint" at the San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art Rental Gallery, San Francisco Art Institute's San Francisco Art Festival,
Crocker Museum's Crocker-Kingsley Exhibition, Pro Arts Gallery's Regional Canvas
Show and Pro Arts Annual, the Berkeley Art Center Annual, Gallery 44, and "Jeff
Carr" at the Thomas-Wilson Gallery.
